training for hiking in a flat city, Guides, Atlas Mountains

Flat-city preparation can build useful walking fitness. Combine consistent walks, controlled step work and practice with your intended pack.

Build from your current routine

Start with outings you can finish comfortably. Increase demands gradually and note how you feel the next morning. Wear the socks and footwear you intend to take so that fit problems appear before travel.

Add climbing and descending

Stairs, a stable low step or an inclined treadmill can introduce uphill effort. Use a handrail when needed. A safe outing on real hills can reveal gaps that indoor training misses, particularly on descents. Avoid making every session a maximum-effort test.

Keep altitude separate

Home training cannot predict your altitude response. Use the Toubkal training guide to organise preparation and describe recent activity honestly to Atlas Hikes. Seek appropriate clinical advice for persistent pain or unusual exercise symptoms before increasing the workload.
