Choosing a Day-Hike Backpack Size

Choose a daypack by the equipment needed for the route, not by the word day. A cold high route can need more kit than a short village outing.

Assemble the load

Include water, food, weather layers, personal essentials and emergency items. Leave room for clothing removed during the walk. Avoid choosing a bag that fits only while you wear every layer.

Test access and comfort

Load the pack and check that it sits comfortably. Retrieve frequently used items without unpacking the reserve. A bag with many pockets is useful only if the arrangement works for you.

Confirm the itinerary

Ask Atlas Hikes what remains in your personal pack even when other luggage is transported. Use the daypack organisation guide. Select capacity after understanding the actual day instead of relying on a universal litre figure for all hikes.
