A dry channel is not safe simply because no rain is falling overhead. Canyon walks need a weather and escape-route decision before entry.
Decide before the narrow section
Ask about the wider catchment, forecast and exits to higher ground. Choose another route if conditions are uncertain. Avoid camping in dry riverbeds or treating a confined gorge as storm shelter.
Respond to rising water
Move away from the channel toward safe higher ground. Do not wade or drive through floodwater or stop for photographs. Follow local emergency instructions. The National Weather Service flood guidance explains why rapidly changing water conditions require caution.
Agree an alternative
