A day walk can run late. Emergency protection and an overdue-contact plan should be arranged before leaving the trailhead.
Stop somewhere appropriate
If continuing would require unsafe navigation, inform your guide or emergency contact and share your location. Stay together away from obvious hazards such as channels, unstable slopes and exposed ridges. Keep dry insulation and emergency shelter in your own accessible pack.
Make your location clear
Conserve essential phone power and use light or a whistle to signal when appropriate. Communicate any necessary move. Do not rely on finding firewood or lighting a fire: conditions, restrictions and wildfire risk may make that unsuitable.
Pack for a delay
Carry a headlamp, extra food, suitable clothing and emergency protection you know how to use. Review the Atlas packing checklist. Clarify who acts if you are overdue; a short advertised walk still needs a contingency plan.
