Atlas Mountains Geography for Trip Planning

where are the Atlas Mountains, Guides, Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains extend across northwestern Africa, including Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. For a Morocco holiday, “the Atlas” is a broad destination label, not a single trailhead or one mountain to climb.

Choose a specific area

The High Atlas and Middle Atlas are different areas to consider when planning a trip. Do not assume that two tours mentioning the Atlas Mountains start near each other or can be combined without additional travel.

For Atlas Hikes' Imlil-based offers, ask for the exact meeting point and route. Start with our Marrakech-to-Imlil guide rather than a generic travel time for the whole mountain region.

Put Toubkal in context

Mount Toubkal is in Morocco's High Atlas and reaches 4,167 metres, approximately 13,671 feet. It is the highest mountain in North Africa. Height above sea level is not the same as the amount you climb on a particular day; that depends on the starting point and route.

The Kasbah du Toubkal website describes Imlil's location below the mountain. For broader inspiration, Morocco's tourism office introduces mountains and nature destinations.

Choose by the experience you want

You can be interested in the mountains without wanting a summit itinerary. Compare a day walk, a village overnight and a longer trek by actual walking stages and logistics.

Our village trekking guide explains that choice. If you want Toubkal, read the route overview.

When you contact Atlas Hikes, give the number of days you have, your starting city and your preferred pace. That is more useful than asking for a tour of all the Atlas Mountains.
