Keep camera equipment reachable without leaving it exposed all day. A consistent packing routine helps reduce dust problems.

Limit lens changes

Choose a lens that covers most planned pictures. Change lenses in a sheltered stopping place and prepare the replacement before opening the camera. Keep caps in a clean pocket, not on the ground.

Separate cleaning supplies

Use a padded pouch for knocks and appropriate protection for dust and rain. Keep a clean lens cloth separate from the cloth used on the outside of the bag. Never rub visible grit across glass. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions rather than treating weather-sealing as unlimited protection.

Plan packing time

Inspect caps, body and bag before repacking in the evening. Seek suitable service for cleaning tasks beyond your experience. For a photography-focused hike, allow time to stow equipment carefully as well as time to take pictures.
